The Department of Research and Grant Support, Institute for Interdisciplinary Research at the University for Development Studies, Ghana hosted Philanthropy Circuit to a webinar titled – Exploring the Role of Philanthropy in Development Research.
The webinar which took place on 26 August 2021 had Eme Iniekung, Programs Coordinator for Philanthropy Circuit as a keynote speaker and Imogen Bellwood-Howard from the Institute of Development Studies as a moderator and discussant.
In introducing the perspectives of local development, Eme outlined how a poor understanding of philanthropic practice is a factor hindering the growth of the development space in Africa. She noted the huge knowledge gap, unavailability of data, lack of collaboration and untapped relationships with other sectors including academia, provide barriers leading to a rationale for more collaborative research into the Africa development space.
Participants, who spanned both the development and academic sector, were encouraged to build trust, and engage with practitioners from other sectors. She also prompted the audience to focus on increasing personal & professional visibility through social media platforms, foster collaborations and expand on sector specific research.
