As part of Philanthropy Circuit’s 2022 Dialogue Series on #AfricanPhilanthropy, this premier Twitter Chat explored ‘Digital Advocacy and Women’s Rights Organisations in Africa’ with the amazing teams from Women’s Technology Empowerment Center – Nigeria, and Zamara Foundation – Kenya. This was the subject of exploration in the chat with the Center on African Philanthropy and Social Investment – CAPSI and West Africa Civil Society Institute – WACSI.

The Giving for Change Program – Catalyzing Community Philanthropy, Participation & Voice

In a bid to bring more understanding of the Giving for Change program to the development space, Philanthropy Circuit hosted the Giving for Change consortium; Africa Philanthropy Network, Kenya Community Development Foundation, Global Fund for Community Foundations and Wilde Ganzen, to a live Twitter chat on 30 August, 2021.

April 2021 Twitter Chat

On Wednesday 28 April, we engaged in the monthly Twitter Chat with guest Segun Kosoko Co-Founder & Co-CEO of crowdfunding platform Donate_NG. The chat centered on Exploring Alternative Funding Sources for Nonprofits.

The chat revealed how crowdfunding when done properly provides multiple benefits – raising funds, creating awareness, impact, and fostering change. It also serves to hone the nonprofit’s source of funding when a recurring donation is in place and validates its support structure within the giving community.

The February conversation on Twitter between Eme Iniekung, Program Coordinator – Philanthropy Circuit @CircuitEditor, and Victor Odhiambo, Executive Director – Garden of Hope Foundation @GardenofHopeFdn was themed ‘Driving Community Impact: Insights on Sustainability ‘and held on Thursday, February 25, 2021, by 2 pm WAT (4 pm EAT). 

Insights were shared on the place of mentorship, building entrepreneurial and leadership skills for sustainable community impact, and the importance of an enabling environment by the government for civil society.

At the first Twitter Chat for the year, Eme Iniekung, Program Coordinator for Philanthropy Circuit @CircuitEditor, and Chidi Koldsweat Founder of Donor for Africa Foundation @DonorsforAfrica discussed Reimagining Fundraising and Capacity-building for African Nonprofits, on Thursday, January 28, 2021, by 2 pm (4 pm EAT). 

The discussion provided a platform for understanding the challenges and nuances in Africa’s development sector, particularly as it relates to fundraising and capacity building.

The Women’s Leadership in African Philanthropy Panel Discussion hosted by Philanthropy Circuit explored important dimensions of women’s leadership; as changemakers within organizations, and as integral instruments of resource mobilization in African philanthropy.

The panel moderated by Katja Schiller Nwator, Founder of Philanthropy Circuit had in discussion Liz Ngonzi, Founder & CEO of The International Social Impact Institute and Mosun Layode, Executive Director of African Philanthropy Forum.

On Tuesday, May 11, 2022, the third day of The Catalysing Change Week 2022,  Philanthropy Circuit led a session on Engaging African Philanthropists in Its Development. The session led by Eme Iniekung engaged Grace Maingi of Kenya Community Development Foundation, Gima Forje of  TY Danjuma Foundation, Nana Afadzinu of West Africa Civil Society Institute and other ecosystem partners on the philosophy of giving, the innate generosity of Africans and the resources at our disposal

Guests shared expert thoughts on catalysing Africa’s development, reimagining what true philanthropy looks like within an indigenous framework, and creating a space for voice, participation, and shifting power dynamics.

Catalyst 2030 Network's Nigeria Chapter Launch

Philanthropy Circuit has joined Catalyst 2030 to pursue big ideas for achieving the UN SDGs. Philanthropy Circuit convened the Nigeria Chapter on May 11, 2022 with the aim of growing the country’s network of inspiring social innovators and strengthening Nigeria’s social entrepreneurship system.

Showcasing African Nutrition
Philanthropy Circuit - Online Events - Africa Day 2022 Commemoration - Year of Nutrition
Philanthropy Circuit, The Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment (CAPSI), The Mandela Institute for Development Studies (MINDS) Southern Africa Youth Forum (SAYoF), and IFC World Bank Group on the 26th of May hosted a webinar on Showcasing African Nutrition Through Our Food. Speakers elaborated on the future of food security in Africa, the output from the webinar will contribute to youth voices in its engagement with regional partners in marshaling a greater and coordinated response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and mitigating food security challenges. Philanthropy Circuit organized the Philanthropy and Collaboration; Catalysts for Social Change Webinar to share data from its research study over the year.

The webinar had Kehinde Ayeni, the Chief Operating Officer of Leap Africa and Oyebisi Oluseyi, the Executive Director of Nigeria Network of NGOs as speakers. Guests spoke on the increase in collaborations witnessed during the Covid-19 pandemic and offered insights into what organizations must do to attract support, growth and sustainability.

Exploring the Role of Philanthropy in Research Development
The Department of Research and Grant Support, Institute for Interdisciplinary Research at the University for Development Studies, Ghana hosted Philanthropy Circuit to a webinar titled – Exploring the Role of Philanthropy in Development Research. The webinar which took place on 26 August , 2021 had Eme Iniekung, Program Coordinator for Philanthropy Circuit as a keynote speaker and Imogen Bellwood-Howard from the Institute of Development Studies as a moderator and discussant. Insights on the nuances, challenges and opportunities for development research were shared.

As work becomes more digitalised, technology solutions are set to cater to operational and productivity needs. Cloud computing services present a viable option for nonprofits willing (and able) to scale operations.

Philanthropy Circuit joined the West Africa Civil Society Institute, the Nigerian Network of NGOs and Afrilogic Solutions to provide a civil society perspective to the opportunities and challenges cloud computing presents for nonprofits in Africa.

Philanthropy Circuit - De-risking and Redefining the Funding Paradigm

Philanthropy Circuit presented with a panel hosted by the Adhyayan foundation on De-risking and Redefining the Funding Paradigm. This session was part of the Catalyst 2030 Network #CatalysingChangeWeek.

Eme Iniekung provided insights into the paradigm shifts in funding and fundraising in Africa, and proferred the alternatives opening up for social entrepreneurs.

Mobilizing Philanthropy for Africa's Development

The Mobilizing Philanthropy for Arica’s Development session facilitated by Eme Iniekung (Philanthropy Circuit), alongside panelists Jimm Chick Fomunjong (West Africa Civil Society Institute), Ese Emerhi (The Global Fund for Community Foundations), and Tendai Murisa (SIVIO Institute), was co-created with the Catalyst 2030 Network as part of Catalysing Change Week on 5 May 2021.

Panelists discussed the role of philanthropies on the African continent as well as the importance of African community-led initiatives in fostering the region’s development. The panelists shared very interesting insights into the need to facilitate collaboration among African philanthropies to inform the transformations we want to see happening on the continent. Also to re-design and re-imagine foundations to create more inclusive systems which can listen to, and value existing African assets.

Localisation Agenda: Questioning the Intermediary Donor System

The West African Civil Society Institute put together a panel  in partnership with the Global Fund for Community Foundation (GFCF), STAR Ghana Foundation and the NEAR (Network for Empowered Aid Response) Network put together a panel consisting of Eme Iniekung from Philanthropy Circuit, Gima Forje   of TY Danjuma Foundation, Chernor Bah of Purposeful and Ibrahim Tanko Amidu of  Star-Ghana.

The panelists discussed and interrogated the intermediary donor structure instituted under the aid system’s Localisation Agenda. Delving into practices and mechanisms that would see an increased flow of resources to local actors and increased recognition of – and support in building – local resources, knowledge, experience and assets, including local philanthropy.
